The Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest in le world covering an area of about 10.000 square kilometre shared by India and Bangladesh. Because of its' biodiversity it has been recorded as a UNESCO's 52nd World Heritage site. The name Sundarans is taken from a tree name 'Sundari which is abundant in the Sundarbans. This forest provides habitat for different wildlife including birds, fishes, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. It is mostly famous for the Royal Bengal Tiger. But the Sundarbans is being rapidly destroyed by a rising sea level, storm surges and increased salinity. The Sundarbans forest took the brunt of super cyclone Sidor in 2007. Even Aila occurred in 2009 devastated the Sundarbans tremendously. This natural shield is weakening which is very alarming fot us. The rate of retreat is not normal and if this continues at this speed, already threatened tiger population living in he Sundarbans wil! be put father at risk. The Sundarbans plays an important
role in our national economy. It is the single largest source of timber, wood etc. This forest also produces honey, fish and materials also. We should protect this extraordinary forest.
